Did you ever think to drop the EPA Pollution Preventer and replace it by our nice little fat Linux-Penguin?
In October 1999 I posted in de.comp.os.unix.linux.misc that I did this and that I find this much better than adding additional Logos on Kernel boottime.
Afterwords people bombed me with Emails and followups how to do this, thats why I decided to set up this page.
Here is where I found the original Information regarding this topic. Read on for my own (Linux centric) description.
How to actualy replace the Logo:
Basicly all you need to do is to convert your bmp-image (104x121, 1bpp) with the DOS-Tool bmp2epa (courtesy of Michael Rosenbaum). The bmp2epa-Tool also gives you access to the limited colors which the EPA Format provides.
There is also a M$ Windows Version of the bmp2epa-Tool on Michaels Homepage, but I didn't check if this works with wine yet (Remark 01/2003: Does not work).
If you've got your EPA File, you need another Tool called CBROM to create your new Bios which you can flash into your EPROM using the ordinary awdflash.exe Programm usually provided by your Board Manufacturer.
If you don't know how to update your Bios you should have a look into the Manual of your Motherboard.
Documentation about the CBROM Program can be found here. Actually the conversion from the proprietary M$-Word format took me most of the time in setting up this page, as I don't have Windows installad on my computer.

Update January 2003:
Recently I got myself a new Computer and again I replaced the the EPA Logo with a Penguin!
A few things have changed since I wrote this page about 3 Years ago. In the meantime there is an even better freeware EPA-Conversion tool called EPAcoder which just works fine on Linux using wine and comes with documentation in HTML-format. Unfortunately its homepage is not available anymore.
The other thing, that has to be mentioned, is the fact, that in the meantime most Bioses use the Version 2 EPA-Format which is incompatible with the Older Version. But don't worry, just use EPAcoder to convert your Old EPA Logo.
Last but not least, you need to get the most recent Version of CBROM which is 2.15 at the time of writing and worked for me with a 12/2002 Bios.
BTW, over the 3 years this page existed till date nobody recognized, that the Regular Expression in the Title has been wrong!
